Getting close to discharge! (Update from Heather)

Apparently Mike and I were doing updates at the same time - but he beat me to "publishing!" So I figure you'll just get both of our perspectives today! It's been awhile since I've done updates...

It's been a big morning! Yana finally got the drainage tubes out (from between her ribs - ouch!) early this afternoon. An answer to prayer in more than one way: the drainage decreased significantly, from 60 mL to 27 mL in just one day, and then to 14 mL the next day and we needed 48 hours of low drainage - so finally this morning at rounds the surgeons agreed to taking them out! Now walking won't be so painful for our little monkey. I'm sure she'll be running again in no time! The other way that prayer was answered...she had just fallen asleep when the procedure started, so it wasn't as traumatic as it could have been - God is good!

She also came off her oxygen morning because it had stayed in a good range overnight and while awake. Another PTL!

So to give you a picture of the girl we love and know - she's once again tube free on the face and belly, only bandages left on the belly! And she's very protective of that area! She insists on having her shirt down so that no one can access it and she can't see it!

Wow, she's come through so much. I can't believe we're already this far. Indescribable relief. We get to take our girl home again.

She'll be coming home on a diuretic (Lasix) and a blood thinner, both of which we have reason to hope will not be permanent. Every child who's had her surgery stays on those for awhile after. And thankfully, as I think Mike mentioned, we won't have to do finger pricking at home like we thought. But we will have to go for blood work 2x per week at first, then less and less frequently until she doesn't need it anymore.

She's definitely getting back to herself - imagining animals, dragons, dinosaurs, and monsters! Having lots of fun playing at "the beach" (a fabulous play area here. We hope to have "happy" pictures up soon!

Thanks again for the love support!

Heather (Mike, Yana & BB too)

  1. Way to go Yana!! She sure is a fighter. I'm sitting here complaining all day because of a sinus infection - I should learn a lesson from someone much younger who has learned to deal with so much in her short little life. Loving you lots!!!
